What three diaspora founders had in common in this year's Plug and Play cohort

Patterns from the latest Yerevan accelerator cohort: timing, preparation, and the diaspora network effect.

Plug and Play's Yerevan cohort has grown significantly over the past three years. This year's batch included several founders from the Armenian diaspora who had relocated to Yerevan to build their companies.

We worked with three of them on their applications and company setup. Looking back, they shared some interesting patterns.

Pattern 1: They Planned Their Timing

All three founders applied to Plug and Play after they had already established a legal presence in Armenia. They did not wait for acceptance to start the process. They came to Yerevan, registered their companies, and began building local networks before the cohort even started.

This matters because accelerators look for momentum. Having an Armenian entity, local team members, and demonstrated commitment to the market signals that you are serious.

Pattern 2: They Prepared Their Materials

The application process includes pitch decks, financial projections, and team bios. All three founders had these materials ready at a level that would satisfy Silicon Valley investors, not just local expectations.

One founder told me: "I treated the Plug and Play application like a Series A pitch. Even though we were pre-seed."

That level of preparation stood out in a pool where many applicants submitted rough drafts.

Pattern 3: They Leveraged the Diaspora Network

All three founders had connections to the Armenian diaspora before they arrived. Two had family ties. One had met Armenians through tech events in San Francisco.

These connections gave them warm introductions to local investors, potential customers, and other founders. The diaspora network is not just about capital. It is about trust and context.

What This Means for Founders Considering Armenia

If you are thinking about applying to Plug and Play or other Armenian accelerators, start earlier than you think. Build your local presence, prepare investor-grade materials, and tap into the diaspora network.

Armenia Bridge can help with the first two. For the third, you might be surprised how many Armenians are in your existing network. Ask around.

The ecosystem is growing. The opportunities are real. But like any competitive process, preparation matters.
